- What brought you to CrossFit in the first place?
I’ll try to make a very long 2 year journey short…in August 2014 I decided it was time for me to finish my healing process that I had been doing for the prior year and half. I started going to a counselor to help me with a lot of the pain I was dealing with from my divorce and prior life events (The healing of my inner self that I had pushed off for years). Along the way, my counselor and I started talking about my fitness and all the weight I had lost. She seen that there was something missing in my life and that was people. I wasn’t getting out and meeting new people since the divorce. She suggested getting out to a gym. I knew I didn’t want to do a regular gym, so she suggested that I look into Crossfit. I wasn’t really sure about it, because I knew how much I disliked the gym atmosphere. She said she understood and she was the same way, so I took a chance and that’s what brought me to Root 18.
- What was your first impression? How has that changed?
My first impression was probably a little different than most people. I’ll explain why…I signed up for my foundation classes and I started on a Saturday with the Olympic portion. I made it through the class and was all set for the next weekend. During the next week, I was told that my last foundation class needed to be pushed back a week due to a competition (Shermanator) that was being held at Root 18. I was invited to the competition and decided that I would go. The Saturday of the competition I snuck in as it was going on and all I heard and saw was cheering and screaming. As I watched the athletes compete, I was amazed by all the comradery amongst every single person there. I knew right then and there that this “Crossfit” thing was for me.
- What was your first “goal”? Did you hit it?
My first goal was to make it past my first full week of doing Crossfit. I made it, but it wasn’t pretty. For example, my first Saturday endurance workout was 1.5 mile run, 150 burpees, 1.5 mile run. Ouch!! Let’s just say I didn’t finish the workout, because I ran out of time. I made it through my first week though.
- What are you working on now?
Now that I’ve done my first Open, I have started working on the weaknesses I realized I have from doing the Open. I’m working on completing my first pullups, chest 2 bars, bar muscle ups, etc. I’m also really excited to begin Greg’s Olympic lifting program.
- What’s your favorite Root 18 memory?
Believe it or not I have a lot of great memories in just 6 months I’ve been here, but I think the one that sticks out the most is the first night of the Open. Seeing almost the whole gym there for the announcement of 15.1 and then seeing and hearing everyone cheer on the first set of athletes that did 15.1…it was amazing. It also reinforced my decision about joining Root 18!
